I like the stained mahogany and I don't care if it's "real mahogany" or not. On stage, I didn't have this experience though, so maybe it's just the way he had the house mixed? I dunno. He also said that the lows were strong but anytime I played further up the neck, my sound disappeared. Also, the sound guy came up to me after our second set to tell me that the scoop of the tapped coil was so drastic that he was scrambling to re-EQ the house sound so that I could be heard. Strangely, the humbucker setting is quieter then the tapped coil one. The humbucker is like a really mid-forward P(ish) sound, and the tapped single coil is scooped and is kind of reminiscent of a jazz. Moving on, the tones you can get out of this thing are quite nice. Let me just say this to anybody who makes basses - *ALWAYS CONTOUR THE TOP* I dont care if it's cool and "vintagey" to keep it as a slab. Two songs into a set and my wrist got friction burns and it was pretty painful to play thru the rest of the songs, so I swapped back to my Jazz bass. I dunno why I didn't realize it before but I've gotta say that's the worst part of this instrument. Some of you may notice that it's a slab body (no contours). There were no frets sprouting out and the set up out of the box was definitely not perfect but certainly playable. The edges of the fretboard are rolled slightly, and the neck is very comfortable. Here's my impression: first, it's a quality piece of kit. So after playing some of these guys in guitar shops over the last couple of years, I finally decided to pull the plug and bought one! I was on my way to a string of casino shows, so I figured out was a good time to shell out and could give it a run on stage just a few hours later.
